9th HKU-Pasteur Virology Course: Call for Applications is now Open (Deadline 30 April 2012)

We are soliciting applications for the 9th HKU-PASTEUR VIROLOGY COURSE (July 11-27, 2012). To continue our exploration of viruses and the animal/human interface, the course will focus on VIRAL ZOONOSES. Indeed, the concept of “One World, One Health” has gained increased attention following the emergence of a novel influenza virus of swine origin that caused the 2009 pandemic. It has been recognized that increased urbanization, migrating populations, with their domestic animals, and population density with poor hygienic conditions are favoring the appearance of new pathologies, in particular viral zoonosis with emergence or re-emergence of new or known diseases. The program will include lectures reviewing general aspect of viral zoonoses, followed by an in-depth analysis of influenza, focusing on the evolution, transmission, crossing of species barriers and pathogenicity of influenza viruses. The course will end with a review of selected viruses of particular interest in the region. Practical Sessions will complete the theoretical approach and allow students to learn state-of the art techniques and discuss biosafety and ethical issues in virus research.
