Wastewater Surveillance: the HKJC Charities and the Rockefeller Foundation visit HKU-PRP

It was a great pleasure to meet the delegates of the wastewater surveillance workshop organised by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and The Rockefeller Foundation for a visit at HKU-PRP to show them the multidisciplinary project on sewage surveillance that helps safeguarding public health in Hong Kong.

Professor Leo Poon, Co-Director, and Dr Xiaoqing Xu, gave the visitors a tour of the facilities and a presentation of the different components of the program and the technologies developed by the University of Hong Kong.

HKU-PRP has been using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to analyse the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. This sewage surveillance program was widely covered by local and international media and became a routine test in Hong Kong. The project was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2021 Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days.
