Abstract:
The Institute of Research for sustainable Development (IRD) has implemented a multidisciplinary One Health framework in Laos, addressing interconnected challenges in public health, wildlife conservation, and environmental sustainability. Research initiatives focus on the investigation of zoonotic disease transmission, specifically exploring Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection prevalence and dynamics within elephant populations.
Simultaneously, studies examine the impact of anthropogenic factors, such as deforestation and land-use change, on disease emergence and transmission pathways. The program integrates sustainable development interventions, including the exploration of cricket farming as a novel protein source to enhance food security.
Collaboration with the Nakaï International Center for Environmental Research and Education (CIREN) and the Tropical Climate and Environmental Observatory (TCEO) provides critical environmental data to inform disease risk assessments and develop predictive models. Capacity building through targeted training programs enhances local expertise in disease surveillance, epidemiological investigation, and data analysis.
This integrated approach fosters long-term sustainable solutions, promoting a holistic understanding of the complex interplay between human, animal, and environmental health within the Laotian context.
