[Where Are They Now] Michael Kim Tat Teoh: “HKU-Pasteur Research Pole is a place that I call home”

More from our alumni!

Today, let’s meet Michael Kim Tat Teoh, a 2009 PhD graduate from HKU-Pasteur who is now Assistant Director, Business Development and Partnership at the Continuing Education and Training (CET) Academy, Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

HKU-PRP: What is your best memory at HKU-Pasteur and what makes this place special for you?

Michael Kim Tat Teoh: Many opportunities to attend workshops, seminars, and training courses. For example, I attended BSL2+ training at Institute Pasteur Shanghai, attended Cell Biology course at the Institut Pasteur, Paris, and 4-month attachment in Prof Ben Margolis's lab at the University of Michigan. On top of all these training opportunities, I truly treasure and appreciate the friendship that was built about 11 years ago, and last until today. I still stay in touch with Anne Li, Lewis Siu, and Mateuz Kudelko. HKU-Pasteur Research Pole is a place that I call home.

HKU-PRP: What did you do after graduating from HKU-Pasteur and what are you doing now?

Michael Kim Tat Teoh: Upon my graduation from HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, I moved to Singapore in 2010. I started my post-doctoral job at the Singapore Immunology Network (SiGN). I resigned from my post-doc job about six months later.

I then joined Ngee Ann Polytechnic as a lecturer and I was assigned to teach Chemistry, Cell Biology, Forensic Chemistry modules. I also led a research team to develop a multi-channels diagnostic kit for concurrent detection of multiple pathogens using gold nanoparticles and this project was supported by the Ministry of Education Translational Research Fund. In Oct 2015, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer and appointed as Course Chair for Diploma in Biomedical Science.

With support from Roberto Bruzzone and coordination work by Anne Li, I setup internhip programme that allows my students to undertake their 4-month internship programme at the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole. A total of three students had undertaken their internship at HKU-Pasteur Research.

In Oct 2020, I took up a 2- year secondment at the Continuing Education and Training (CET) Academy, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Currently, I am Assistant Director, Business Development and Partnership, where I oversee curation of training programmes with the aim to upskill/reskill Singapore Workforce to better prepare adult learners for the future economy. I also work alongside my teammates in the planning of outreach and engagement activities such as roadshows to promote training programmes offered by Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

HKU-PRP: In one word, how would you define your experience at HKU-Pasteur?

Michael Kim Tat Teoh: Grateful!
