On Friday 20 March 2026, the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao, hosted a panel discussion entitled “Women in Science: Career Paths, Challenges and Equal Opportunities,” as part of the initiative “Science Talks are Women Talks” marking International Women’s Rights Day.

The event brought together members of the academic community, researchers, students, and invited guests for an engaging and thoughtful discussion on the realities of women’s careers in science.
A space for open and meaningful dialogue
Moderated by Rachel Wong (Press Office, Consulate General of France in Hong Kong), the panel featured:
Prof. Nancy Leung (HKU School of Public Health, HKU-Pasteur alumna)
Prof. Sook San Wong (HKU-Pasteur Research Pole)
Kimberly Edwards (HKU-Pasteur Research Pole & HKU School of Biological Sciences)
Bringing together diverse career stages and perspectives, the discussion explored professional trajectories in science, institutional challenges, leadership, mentorship, and equal opportunities in research environments.
The panel offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on both the progress achieved and the challenges that remain in fostering more inclusive academic and scientific communities.
Inspiring perspectives and shared experiences
Through their personal experiences, the speakers highlighted the importance of visibility, support networks, and institutional responsibility in enabling women to thrive in scientific careers.
The discussion also underscored the diversity of pathways in research : from academic leadership to research management, and the need to recognize and value these different trajectories.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and continue the conversation and highlighting also the career path of Lisa Touyon, Resarch Assistant within Sook San Wong's laboratory.
Strengthening collaboration and engagement
This event reflects the shared commitment of the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao to promoting gender equality, inclusive research environments, and international scientific dialogue.
