The HKU Pasteur Research Pole is pleased to welcome Mia Baud, who has recently joined the team to carry out her Master’s thesis project.

Mia is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Molecular Microbiology at Leibniz University of Hannover. She will be spending the coming year at the HKU Pasteur Research Pole in Dr. You Che’s laboratory, with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Her research focuses on the skin microbiome of elderly individuals in nursing homes, with a particular interest in the transmission of ESKAPE pathogens carrying antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Using culturomics and nanopore sequencing, her project aims to better understand how the skin may act as a reservoir and transmission route for AMR pathogens among elderly populations.
This work seeks to contribute to improved infection control strategies in care facilities, while also exploring alternative approaches to antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections in the elderly.
As a Franco-American scientist, Mia is particularly enthusiastic about working in an international research environment. Beyond her scientific training, she is keen to further develop her science communication skills across cultural contexts. Looking ahead, she aspires to become a lecturer, helping to inspire future generations of scientists and bridge the gap between laboratory research and the general public.
Starting in 2026, the HKU Pasteur Research Pole will regularly publish news highlighting new members joining our laboratories, in order to showcase the diversity of profiles, projects and scientific trajectories that contribute to our research community.
